Intaglio (pronounced in TALL yo) printmaking is one of the oldest forms for making prints. However, due to the immense amount of time required to produce prints, it was replaced by faster techniques. The process is simple. The plate is engraved, then inked and then wiped clean, leaving ink only in the cuts in the metal. After placing a damp sheet of paper over the plate it is rolled through a press, offsetting the ink onto the paper. The process must be repeated for every print. Although it's quite time consuming, and painstaking care must be given through the entire process, the end results are well worth it.
